Calculating
the Proof°
of
your SPIRIT
Proof
is an Anglo-American unit from years gone by for the alcohol content of
spirits.
The system dates from the 18th Century, when gun powder was moistened
with an alcohol solution. This is one of the reason the gunpowder had
to be kept dry, as the alcohol bonds with water readily. If it
was
still explosive, the solution was "proofed".
The proof scale of Great Britain of approximately a ratio of 7:4 can be
set for the conversion of ° proof to Vol% (70° Proof =
40
Vol%).
Pure alcohol in Great Britain is therefore 175° Proof spirit.
In the USA the "proof number" is defined as the double of the alcohol
content in percent by volume, and this is calculated at a set
temperature of 60° F (15·5° C).
Therefore in the USA, a content of 80 proof corresponds to 40 Vol% and
pure alcohol is 200° proof.
To overcome this, the percentage by volume is now the standard
measurement worldwide.
